 It’s the world’s largest sand island, it’s World Heritage-listed and it’s full of natural wonders to explore. But we bet you didn’t know these interesting facts about Fraser Island.

  • It was home to a secret training camp for the Z-force Commando School during World War II. Remnants can still be found near McKenzie’s Jetty on the western side of the island
  • Underneath the island is a giant dome shaped water table and is estimated to have between 10 and 20 million mega litres of water
  • Eli Creek pours up to four million litres of water into the ocean every hour
  • It’s one of the few places in the world where the beach also doubles as a highway and a landing strip
  • Central Station was home to a school in the early 1900’s
  • The deepest lake on Fraser Island is Lake Wabby. It’s estimated to be over 14m deep
  • Fraser Island is home to the tallest lighthouse in Queensland, which was built in 1870
